'Five Stars

Wonderful novel!  A real page-turner with very credible characters -- I feel like I have known them. The author shows amazing attention to detail: I am myself an American married to a Dane and have visited most of the places mentioned in the novel, I know how vivid and accurate a description of reality that is meticulously done. Best of all, the book is really thought-provoking. It's also scary to think that it was based on a true story.'

'I LOVE THIS BOOK

Crescent Varrone’s book, Shadows in Summer, is out of the ordinary in most respects. Using the convenient paranormal leitmotiv of the haunted house Varrone explores the eternal topic of mankind’s struggle with religion and spirituality. His six very credible narrators have been skillfully crafted, but in a most non intrusive way, so as to represent archetypical human approaches to spirituality. The reader will be delighted to encounter the skeptic, the agnostic, the converted, the conventional (Catholic), the charlatan and the atheist as they meander in and out of Varrone’s mind gripping story.

Varrone’s book stands out from other works in this category of literature also by the richness of his language (would make Shakespeare proud) and the wealth of cultural references. Shadows in Summer is also brimming with a kind of intangible literary value that can only be brought about by long cross cultural exposure and a true bilingual ability. These are factors that can never truly be added by pure research. If forced to point out one slightly challenging aspect of the book, it would be Varrone’s penchant for displaying encyclopedic knowledge of facts. But, hey, while reading a book one might as well pick up some factual knowledge along the way.

It took me longer than normal to read Shadows in Summer. Once my wife got a hold of the book she would not let go of it until she finished. Her verdict: 'Jeg elsker denne boken!' (I love this book). Those who know Scandinavian languages and cultures know that 'elsker' is a word reserved exclusively for the exceptional persons and experiences in life. I became quite jealous.'

FIVE STARS!

'Smart, Suspenseful Brew

Shadows in Summer is a smart, suspenseful brew, spilling over with interesting information about Danish history and culture. Its compelling characters draw you into their lives and relationships, until you too are haunted by the unanswered questions they face.'

'Bravo!

I've just finished Shadows of Summer, and want to tell you how very much I enjoyed and admired it. I was savoring it in daily tid-bits, but got so caught up that I read the last 250 pages today.'Several things impressed me: the deft deployment of multiple perspectives, each with a distinct style and angle of vision; you also delivered the exposition cannily, with great timing--withholding and divulging material. I love how competing accounts of what's happening play off each other, and how the mystery isn't resolved until the very end. There's a rich sense of ambivalence and complexity here, holding open options, generating speculations, interrogating these speculations. You integrate information and concepts dramatically too--like The Magic Mountain, giving ideas a felt life. I enjoyed the wink at the reader with the sly reference, 'Mister Hans. Kastrup.'

Naturally, I appreciated several adroit allusions to Shakespeare, all from my 201 classes, doubtless!  Not only your Williams education but your Catholic training serves you exceptionally well. It's a smart and subtle narrative that doesn't show off its erudition; pertinent ideas are integrated and dramatized. The language gap is both telling and amusing ('the Enevsea title game'!) A deeply serious book, it's leavened with wit and humor, and enhanced by irony.

It's really a splendid novel.'

'FOUR STARS (out of five)

Darkly flavored by family traumas and World War II, Shadows in Summer is written as a response to a series of actual events in the author's life. Crescent Varrone, a longtime resident of Scandinavia and the winner of a Fulbright Scholarship in 1985, explores the idea of a haunting by writing his novel from all the possible approaches to the experience -- psychological, metaphysical, religious, skeptical, analytical, and agnostic. Each perspective is voiced by one of the novel's main characters.

The use of six voices, each with a different perspective, allows the author to keep readers guessing as to what is really occurring within the house...

One of the novel's greatest strengths is the clear sense of place it provides. Denmark is shown through its food, its architecture, and its history, especially that of World War II...

Because of its theme and setting, this novel is not a light read, but for readers who love something meaty to sink their teeth into, especially something with a foreign flavor and an unusual twist, Varrone's novel should satisfy.'

This is a wonderful book -- grips your attention from the start, it's a real page-turner. It's more mentally stimulating than your standard airport bestseller… (and) the Danish setting gives an interesting view...

'FIVE STARS!

We watch these characters wrestle with deep philosophical questions… The author's carefully crafted descriptive writing, some of it rising to the level of poetry, give this volume gravitas and propel it gracefully…

Out of the category of mere pulp thriller! '

'I am always interested in hearing reader reactions. Reading groups are thriving across the country and around the world, and play an important role in shaping the market for books - and the destiny of authors. Yet authors, jealous of their time, have not always been supportive.'

Inspired by John Shors, author of Beneath a Marble Sky, Crescent is making a commitment to balancing the relationship between writer and reader.

Crescent will make himself available to reading groups around the world, Friday to Sunday, from 8 pm to midnight Central European Time (Copenhagen), which is 2 pm to 6 pm Eastern Time (New York). Crescent will talk with reading groups that have 10 members and a speaker phone.
